Securidaca longepedunculata grows in the North-West and Limpopo Provinces of South Africa as well as in some tropical and subtropical parts of Africa. There are many different medicinal uses for this tree used all around Africa. It can be used to treat sicknesses as small as headaches or as severe as arthritis.
The roots of the tree can be used for treatments to human ailments such as coughs, chest complaints, toothaches, gout, fevers, constipation,impotencia, diabetes and microbial infections.
In a 2008 study two new xanthones were isolated from the bark of the root, and one of them showed potent activity to relax the smooth muscle in the corpus cavernosum by 97% compared with sildenafil (Viagra) in 1.8 × 10 -5 mg / ml.
Xanthones of S. longepedunculata were able to stimulate smooth muscle relaxation in the corpus cavernosum of the penis, which supports the traditional use of the bark of the root.
